Mercury one of the most is one of the most toxic substances in the world. It is especially dangerous to embryos, prenatal babies and babies in early stages of their lives. It can affect our nervous, digestive, and immune system, it can also damage our lungs, skin, kidneys, eyes, and other vital body organs.

Mercury can be found in our environment, mostly as a result of human activities, mining, waste incineration. When the Mercury is released, it changes from elemental mercury into methyl mercury and slowly accumulates itself in sea animals, for example, fishes, clams, etc.

Usually human gets exposed to mercury from consuming seafood and inhaling the Mercury when working in certain industries.

World Health Organization confirms this problem and warns us how toxic Mercury is, and on the other hand, amalgam fillings are still used in the world today, because they’re cheap. Even though composite fillings have been on the market for several years, some dentists still use amalgam in their dental practice.

It has been proven many times how Mercury negatively affects our bodies, and how dangerous Mercury really is.

New research shows that the Mercury contamination can be seen in human hair.

Scientists usually measure the Mercury contamination in humans by measuring their hair for the concentration of methylmercury. Hair tests are usually used for measuring exposure of Mercury from seafood consumption. For exposure to mercury from other sources like for example elemental and inorganic Mercury scientists usually analyze our blood and urine.

Studies have shown that exposure to mercury, and high levels of mercury in our bodies can be the result of amalgam fillings.

Scientist Jean-Paul Bourdineaud, professor of environmental toxicology at the University of Bordeaux, France, claims that urinary Mercury concentration test is usually the most accurate and widely used biomarker for finding out the levels of chronic mercury exposure to mercury vapor and divalent Mercury. But inorganic Mercury from dental amalgams can be detected also with hair tests because it has distinct intermolecular structure that is different from methyl Mercury from consuming seafood.

Increased levels of mercury connected to improper Mercury amalgam removal.

Scientists thought that hair tests only showed Mercury contamination from seafood consumption. But that may not be the case. Because the hair grows only one centimeter per month, the Mercury contamination can be pinpointed to specific time in the past.

Study showed that levels of mercury contamination in a specific person hugely increased in the time when that person got his amalgam fillings removed. The test that revealed that is called x-ray nano fluorescence and it shows even the removal of single Mercury amalgam filling. This can help improve treatment and give us valuable information for further research of how dangerous amalgam fillings really are.

American dental Association still claims amalgam is safe to use.

American dental Association still claims there is no risk to health when using amalgam fillings. But the latest research showed that even a removal of one dental amalgam filling can spike the Mercury levels in our body. American dental Association ignores this study and still supports the study done in 1997, that claims, that removal of amalgam fillings from our mouth poses no risk to our health.

They also support the 2004 study with insufficient data that claims there is no correlation between Mercury dental amalgam and related health complaints, hypersensitivity to mercury amalgams fillings, etc. which current studies. It’s now possible to look at our hair and see what is the level of mercury and when did the spike of mercury level occurred.

Why does American Dental Association still claim that the amalgam is safe to use. The lawyer James Turner has an answer. He claims that the American Dental Association tries to avoid all kinds of product liability suits by patients who have become ill from mercury exposure in their dental fillings.

American dental Association in one lawsuit claimed that they owe no legal duty of care to protect the public from allegedly dangerous products used by dentists. The American dental Association did not manufacture, design, supply or install the Mercury containing amalgams… Dissemination of information related to the practice of dentistry does not create a duty of care to protect the public from potential injury.

How to safely remove mercury fillings

Featured study showed that unsafe removal of our Mercury amalgam fillings can expose us to high levels of toxic Mercury. That is why it’s very important to find a qualified biological dentist that knows how to remove the amalgam as safely as possible.

When the dentist removes amalgam from our teeth, he has to drill it out. During that time, a large amount of vapors are released from mercury fillings. Your body can absorb these vapors and store them inside the fat tissues, bones and other parts of our body. The Mercury can stay there for decades and cause all kinds of health problems.

Biological dentists use specific protocol to remove amalgam fillings. This protocol usually contains the following:

they provide you with alternative air source and you are advised not to breathe through mouth.

They use cold water sprays to minimize the vapor from mercury fillings.

Decking your protective wear and face immediately after the removal of mercury.

They put a rubber dam in your mouth so you don’t swallow the feelings or inhale the toxins and they use a high volume evacuator that pulls the air from the tooth.

That buys it to wash your mouth immediately after the filling was removed.

They use room air purifiers

What is inside your amalgam fillings?

It is estimated that around 75 percent of people are still ignorant of the danger that amalgam can cause to your body. The American dental Association use the term silver fillings so people would think that feelings are made from silver and not from mercury and in fact a regular amalgam filling has twice as much Mercury as silver.

Mercury is one of the most hazardous neurotoxins and even a small amount of mercury in our body can create a total havoc. It is so toxic that if you would spill a Mercury that is inside a regular thermometer inside the lake, that would be closed down you to environmental hazard.

The amount much higher than that is already put in your mouth when you receive your ”silver” filling.

Resources that can help you find a biological dentist

Here is a video you must see. Robert Kennedy, one of the mighty Kennedy brothers is speaking out. He even wrote a book about this deadly poison Thimerosal, that vaccine companies still put inside the vaccines to preserve them, make them last longer and of course SAVE MONEY! It is all about money with these monsters. Kennedy talks about how the studies about Thimerosal were fake, but nobody got thrown in jail for god sake!!

On the other hand you see people selling grass spending years in jail. And these companies, that killed many babies with Thimerosal, cause numerous babies get autism, steal money from people, lie to public, they can just walk away. It is all about money. If you are rich, nobody can touch you. Right Mr Cosby?

I am appalled and sick how these pharma companies even fake their studies, still these days, and nobody gets punished. Please watch this video. if you or your family needs to get vaccinated, be sure to choose a Thimerosal free vaccines.

Thimerosal is a 50% mercury based preservative. 300 x more toxic than lead. It is the most toxic substance in the world bside radioactive substances. And still these money hungrly companies, governments allow us getting injected with this poison, just to squeeze more money out of vaccines…Lower cost, higher autism, and brain damage.

Mercury stays in the brain for decades. Brain has not ability to remove the mercury itself. When mercury passes brain barrier, we are f…cked. Mercury then causes all kind of problems, hormones, autism, ticks, ALS, cancer etc….

Please beware of this, beware of Thimerosal in vaccines.

Recently, I have been through the eye test. I wanted to see how much my vision is impaired. I try to avoid wearing glasses when I am not driving. However, here is what I got from the eye doc.

I have to tell you that my eyesight suddenly worsened 15 years ago. That day, I just felt my vision is really worsened. And I know why. I was really sensitive to EMF radiation from old cathode monitors. You know the old bulky monitors there came out before LCD monitors.

Each time I watched something on that monitor, my throat hurt. I became angry. My eyes itched, burned, and I will not even mention other things. I am also EMF measuring expert, so I know how EMF can be dangerous. Especially old cathode monitors because they emitted a really different kind of EMF fields. However, I don’t want to get into that in this article.

I am just posting this result I got from doc, and I have been avoiding those monitors ever since. My eyesight basically did not worsen. I avoided those big monitors like a plague. I replaced it with LCD later, that saved me. Before that I could not work on a computer for more than 30 minutes. However, with LCD, I can be on my laptop all day long.

Basically, nobody uses those monitors anymore, only if your boss is a cheap bastard, or if you work in government, you might still have to use those prehistoric monitors. I suggest buying a LCD yourself. They are cheap as dirt these days.

I am into fitness. I go to gym a lot. But I haven’t taken any protein shake for years. Because I was allergic to milk protein shakes. I had stomach pain, liver pain, I just felt really bad after taking the protein shake. Milk proteins contain a lot of casein, which is just horrible for the health of your veins, heart etc. Research further please. I felt really bad after taking it.

Few months back I came across Sun Warrior Warrior Blend vegan protein powder. I bought it on Amazon, because I could not find any cheaper anywhere else. It is raw protein powder and vegan at the same time. What that means is that it is really healthy for your body. I have been reading comments on Amazon and people really love it. Many claim that they had the same problem as I did, they could not digest regular milk proteins. They had nausea, stomach pain etc. Same symptoms I had. But when they tried Sunwarrior raw protein powder, they loved it.

I get no bloating, I feel very good after taking this powder. Warrior Blend Vanilla taste very bad I must say. But you can mix it with fruit in smoothie and you will not feel any bad taste. It taste like pea, because it is made from pea protein, hemp protein etc. This particular version with Vanilla flavour taste the worse from all other Sunwarrior products. You have to mix it with fruit or something.

I am not sure how much muscle I have build, but it is way better than whey protein. It has zero ill effects on my body. I bought 3 different types, vanilla, chocolate and rice vanilla version.

I just love it and I recommend it fully.

It contains no animal products, dairy, egg, gluten, soy, added sugar, wheat, or yeast, free of solvents, GMOs, radiation, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, or artificial colors

I have upgraded my toothpaste lately. Here is my latest recipe.

I use the following ingredients.

Baking soda

Hydrogen peroxide

Xylitol

Tea Treal Oil

Menthol oil extract

I just mix baking soda with peroxide so I get a paste, then I add few drops of tea tree oil, which is amazing antibacterial oil, I just added xylitol powder today and also some menthol oil, or mint oil extract so it tastes fresh. I am telling you, you don’t need fluoride in your paste, which is poison, also you dont need foaming agents, that just prevent teeth from self reminalization.

If you want healthy teeth, you need to make it yourself. Baking soda is a natural cleaning agent. It can be used for cleaning dishes, kitchen, and you will get better result than using standard liquid soaps. It is that powerful.

Just found this great article, read it, it si important

source: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/life/style/6433965.html

If you’ve bought sunscreen lately, you may have noticed that 70 is the new 15.

We used to feel safe with sunscreen labeled SPF 15. We thought “sun protection factor” 15 meant we could stay in the sun 15 times longer than we could with no sunscreen at all.

We were wrong.

SPF numbers have less to do with time in the sun and more to do with the amount of harmful ultraviolet light making its way to your skin, according to the Food and Drug Administration. And now that SPF numbers are breaking into the triple digits — a handful of products boast a sun protection factor of 100 — the lowly SPF 15 sounds like a sunburn waiting to happen.

So what gives?

“Buying a sunscreen with a high SPF is not as important as using enough sunscreen, getting it on all the places and reapplying when you need to,” saysDennis Hughes, a pediatric oncologist at the Children’s Cancer Hospital at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. “People also forget that sunscreen doesn’t start working the minute you apply it. It takes up to 30 minutes. You should be applying it before you go outside.”

A hat is a good idea, particularly for men with thinning hair, Hughes says. And people with short hair must remember to put lotion on the tops of their ears, a vulnerable spot for sunburns and skin cancer.
Factoring for SPF

Many of Hughes’ patients are young people who have been diagnosed with melanoma, a skin cancer usually caused by too much exposure to the sun. Hughes teaches families good skin-care habits and fields plenty of questions about SPF numbers along the way.[image1_left]

“When people bring up SPF 70, the joke I make is that at a certain point you can just use latex paint — that way you’ll know when it washes off,” Hughes says. “Is 70 different from 45? In a lab, absolutely. But if you look at the Web sites maintained by organizations that care about this, like the American Academy of Dermatologists, they never talk about anything higher than 15. Once you’re above 15, you’re blocking a big fraction of the sun’s rays.”

SPF numbers are often misinterpreted. If you feel like doing the math, Hughes says, think of the SPF number as X times more coverage than no sunscreen at all. To figure out the percentage of harmful rays that SPF 15 absorbs, he says, divide 14 by 15. For SPF 30, divide 29 by 30. And so on.

You’ll discover that SPF 15 blocks about 93 percent of the UVB (ultraviolet B) rays that cause sunburns. SPF 30 absorbs nearly 97 percent of those same rays. SPF 50, 98 percent. By the time you get to SPF 70 or 100, the difference in absorption is quite small.

Hughes recommends SPF 30 for people with sun-sensitive skin. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends at least SPF 15.
Thin skin

For the extra-sensitive areas around the eyes, where the skin is thin and particularly prone to sunburn and wrinkling, people may want to increase their protection, dermatologists say.

Try applying a lip balm with SPF around the eyes, says Carol Drucker, an associate professor in M.D. Anderson’s dermatology department. The waxy texture stays in place and does not bleed into this sensitive area.

Another option: Apply a good mineral-based sunscreen around the eyes since chemical-based sunscreens can cause irritation, says Susan Chon, another assistant professor in M.D. Anderson’s dermatology department.

The effectiveness of any sunscreen depends on individual factors, including how much sunscreen someone uses, the time of day when a person is exposed to the sun, the time of year and how much a person sweats.

Neutrogena, which has introduced products with SPFs of 85, 90 and 100+, claims that most people apply less than the dermatologist-recommended 1 ounce of sunscreen to exposed areas of their bodies. (An ounce, by the way, is enough to fill a shot glass.) Under application can result in far less coverage than the SPF promises. Even with a high SPF, Neutrogena recommends reapplying sunscreen every two hours.

For Hughes, it’s important to pick a sunscreen you like.

Wow this story is amazing. Here is a testimonial from a guy who had numerous heart attacks, he was even a vegan, and at the age 41 he had his first heart attack. Poor guy, he had to go through so many different heart surgeries, and did not loose the will to live. Why I am writing this is that I sometimes feel I will die of a heart attack soon. I feel fainted, have chest pain, elevated bp. What I don’t believe is the meds. Sorry but if I have to go I have to go in natural way. I am only 34 yo. And if god wants to take me, he can. I love my life but I will not have a miserable life taking BP meds, possible multiple operations, heart medications,
I believe in high doses of vitamins. I really do! I mean high, many times I take 10 multivitamin tablets. But lets get back to this story. Here is this guy testimonial, it is amazing story, maybe it can save your life.

—————————————————– ——————- ————- ——– —— —-
Cure For Heart Disease – True Testimonial
Update Nov. 28, 2006

Background: 1995 first of four heart attacks, quadruple bypass, stent Operations, five total operations to date. I declined a pacemaker implant (TEST) in Dec. of 2003.
Continued problem: from 1995 to 2003 numerous heart attacks, operations, feeling almost hopeless. I had tried numerous things that my doctors recommended. I became a strict vegan, no: eggs, chicken, fish, etc. did not smoke, etc. these practices were put into place immediately after my first heart attack and quadruple bypass in fall of 1995 for a period of over five years.

On the edge of death: chest pain, no energy, the feeling of doom, fall of 2005. I did not think I would be alive on Christmas or new year of 2005. my health wasn’t good, but I was in a steep decline at about the end of ’05.

Rediscovery of vitamin c: I searched the Internet for anything that would help me stay alive. I was desperate, too sick to work, no health insurance.

Course change: Pauling protocol. I don’t know if I rediscovered Pauling before or after I discovered the vitamin c foundation web site. I ordered all of Pauling’s books at the local library and read them all. this was about the beginning of 2006, or the end of 2005. many years ago I remember seeing Pauling on TV. and hearing about his work with Vitamin c. I also recall the media in general as labeling him in a very subtle way a “kook”. this probably caused me to not read his work back
in those years. I started taking ten grams of vitamin c every day, spread out five times during the day, about the time i rediscovered Pauling and read his books on vitamin c. I continued to find everything I could about vitamin c. I learned on the vitamin c foundation about other supplements. I also discovered the rich history of vitamin c research. There were many people I read, including Dr. Rath.

I was soon taking as much vitamin c as I could tolerate, 18 grams, plus I added some other supplements. Being a very skeptical person I only started the Pauling protocol with ten grams of c and nothing else.

Currently taking each day, spread out:

vit. C 14 grams (had cut this down once before from 18 to 16)
Lysine 5 grams
Proline 1 gr
Natural E 2000iu
Q10 100 mg
B3 500mg, just recently raised from 250mg
B6 100mg (in the form of a super B complex)
Multi vitamin/mineral
vit. A 24,000iu
Argenine 1 gram
Magnesium 250mg
Vit.K 100mg
L Carnitine 250mg
Taurine 500mg
Omega 3 2000mg, just added this a week ago.
Sea Salt: Himalayan Pink (to season food)

Biggest surprise: I was doing very hard physical work for over two weeks just recently, lots of pain in muscles from head to toe…but NO CHEST, or HEART PAIN!

Recent blood pressure: 122 over 72, a big surprise and I thought it was a mistake. I had just had a big dinner with friends a few hours before. This may have caused the reading to be lower. My “usual” bp is around 135 over 79 and this is continuing to drop, without any bp meds, or any heart meds in almost a year. I would like to see it 120 over 80. my resting pulse is still high at 100. (My records indicate a bp of over 147 over 95 while previously on bp and heart drugs)

Weight: I have been of average height and weight all of my life. I am now fifty two years old. Not until I read Atkins and started eating accordingly did I feel really
good with no hunger between meals or fatigue, like I always used to experience. The major benefit seems to be a drastic reduction in hydrogenated oil, etc. found in bakery and prepared food.

Other body changes: my skin has cleared up and looks great, I had a small amount of acne on my face for most of my life. My joints are less painful and more flexible. I feel much stronger and better than I have in over twenty years!

Diet: two eggs for breakfast almost every day with some meat. I minimize carb’s due to reading and understanding the Atkins books. Most of my carb’s now are in the form of fresh green veg. or fruit. I tried his diet and feel much better. I eat lots of meat, some fresh veggies, and lots of water. I had given up refined sugar many years before my first heart attack, but still had enjoyed sweet carbohydrate deserts.

Bad habits: although I no longer eat cookies and other bakery, I still love pizza and ice cream. I will over do it on carb’s on occasion and feel worse for it. I read labels and try to avoid hydrogenated oil (Check your pizza label) like the poison it is.

Future: health is great and getting better! I feel physically and mentally great! I think I’m going to be ok! I have also found an interest in vitamin B 17 and will look into this.

I would count this website (http://www.vitamincfoundation.org) and the posters on it, Dr. Levy’s new book, other writers (forgive me for not mentioning them all by name (the list is growing rapidly!), (but Owen has provided a very good list on this website)and let us not forget Dr. Linus Pauling who spent the last decades of his life in the study of and publication of information about vitamin c and it’s benefits to mankind.

The Cure for Heart Disease: Theory, History and Treatment

By Owen R. Fonorow, Copyright 2004

OVERVIEW

The theory that Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is related to a deficiency of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) was first proposed by the Canadian physician G. C. Willis in 1953. Willis found that atherosclerotic plaques form over vitamin-C-starved vascular tissues in both guinea pigs and human beings. In 1989, after the discoveries of the Lp(a) cholesterol molecule (circa 1964) and its lysine binding sites (circa 1987), Linus Pauling and his associate Matthias Rath formulated a unified theory of heart disease and invented the cure.Vitamin C and lysine (and proline) in large amounts become Lp(a) binding inhibitors that restore vascular health and destroy atherosclerotic plaques.

THEORY

“Vitamin C is essential for the building of collagen, the most abundant protein built in our bodies and the major component of connective tissue. This connective tissue has structural and supportive functions that are indispensable to heart tissues, to blood vessels, –in fact, to all tissues. Collagen is not only the most abundant protein in our bodies, it also occurs in larger amounts than all other proteins put together. It cannot be built without vitamin C. No heart or blood vessel or another organ could possibly perform its functions without collagen. No heart or blood vessel can be maintained in a healthy condition without vitamin C.” Roger J. Williams

Vitamin C is ascorbic acid, (but it is not really a vitamin). The overwhelming majority of plants and animals make large amounts of ascorbic acid. Mammals synthesize it in the amount averaging 5,400 mg (when adjusted for body weight), and they make even more when under stress. This is about 10-times the amount of CoQ10 that is synthesized in human beings, and roughly 100-times the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA).

Homo Sapiens, like the guinea pig, fruit bat and the high-order primates, cannot synthesize vitamin C because of a missing enzyme. [*] These species must obtain the vitamin in the diet or die of scurvy. A mere 10 mg of vitamin C prevents acute scurvy in humans resulting in the long-held hypothesis that ascorbic acid is a vitamin, required only in minuscule amounts. Those few species that fail to synthesize ascorbic acid all suffer similar ‘heart disease’, a form of the disease that is not prevalent in other species.

Also, heart disease is a misnomer; the underlying disease process reduces the supply of blood to the heart and other organs leading to angina (“heart cramp”), heart attack, and stroke. The disease is characterized by scab-like build-ups that grow on the walls of blood vessels. The correct terminology for this disease process is chronic scurvy, a slower form of the classic vitamin C deficiency disease.

The hypothesis that CVD is ascorbic acid (vitamin C) deficiency disease was first conceived and tested in the early 1950s [*]. Willis devised a method of photographing plaques with X-rays and observed a strange phenomenon in his heart patients. Willis saw that atherosclerotic plaques were not uniformly distributed throughout the vascular system; rather these “blockages” are concentrated near the heart, where arteries are constantly bent or squeezed.

Another Canadian, Paterson, had found that the tissues of heart patients were generally depleted of ascorbate (vitamin C) [*], and it was well known that vitamin C is required for strong and healthy arteries. Willis reasoned that only the mechanical stress caused by the pulse could explain the typical pattern of atherosclerosis that he so often observed in different patients. To Willis, the body was laying down plaque precisely where it was needed in order to stabilize the vascular system.

By the late 1980s, medical researchers had made several intriguing discoveries. First came the discovery that heart disease begins with a lesion, a crack or stress fracture, in the arterial wall. The question became, and remains, as to the cause of these lesions in human beings since they do not arise in most other animals. Then a variant of the so-called “bad” LDL cholesterol called lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a) for short, was studied and found to be really bad. It is sticky because of receptors on the surface of the molecule called lysine binding sites. Work that led to the 1987 Nobel prize in medicine discovered that lysine (and proline) binding sites cause the formation of atherosclerotic plaques. Then, Beisiegel et. al. in Germany examined plaques post mortem and found only Lp(a), not ordinary LDL cholesterol. [*]

Matthias Rath, a medical student and member of the German team, immediately understood the importance of the Lp(a) cholesterol molecule (there are scores of similar lipoprotein molecules) and made the connection with vitamin C. Lp(a) was the genetic difference between beings that suffer cardiovascular disease and those that do not. Lp(a) had evolved only in species that do not make their own vitamin C – e.g. humans and guinea pigs.

Rath brought Lp(a) to the attention of Linus Pauling and was asked to join Pauling’s Institute of Science and Medicine. There Pauling and Rath repeated the earlier Willis experiments, but this time they monitored Lp(a). They discovered that it becomes elevated in guinea pigs deprived of vitamin C, but not in the controls. These experiments connecting elevated-Lp(a) with low serum vitamin C — and atherosclerosis, provide the experimental support for their unified theory. They realized that in most species, sufficient ascorbic acid will prevent stress fractures, but in those species that suffer chronic scurvy, Lp(a) had evolved to patch cracked blood vessels.

Linus Pauling believed that chronic scurvy can be prevented with a daily intake of between 3,000 to 10,000 mg or more vitamin C. This amount approximates what the animals synthesize, and matching animal production is the reason Pauling ingested 18,000 mg daily.

Pauling’s invention for destroying existing atherosclerotic plaques is a large amount of another essential nutrient, the amino acid lysine. Pauling filmed a video lecture in which he recommended that heart patients take between 2,000 and 6,000 mg of lysine daily with their vitamin C (more if serum Lp(a) is elevated). Neither vitamin C nor lysine has any known lethal dose.

HISTORY

In the early 1950s the Canadian doctor Willis theorized that that plaque build-up are the healing response to a repeated insult – the heartbeat. Willis observed that the build-up of atherosclerotic plaques was uniform, and not found throughout the vascular system. It appeared only in the large arteries near the heart where the blood pressure is greatest and where the artery is constantly stressed. He used high-school physics to compute that plaques form precisely where the mechanical forces were greatest on the arterial wall. Willis reasoned that these plaques only form overstress fractures when the intake of vitamin C is low.

Is heart disease a mechanical problem exacerbated by a vitamin C deficiency? Willis decided to find out. His experiment with guinea pigs is described in his landmark 1957 paper THE REVERSIBILITY OF ATHEROSCLEROSIS

Guinea pigs are one of the few species which, like humans, do not make vitamin C. The pigs were divided into several groups; all groups were fed an identical diet except for the vitamin C. At first, vitamin C was restricted in all groups. The control group was sacrificed first and every guinea pig group was found to have atherosclerosis. The remaining groups were then given various amounts of vitamin C, having already induced atherosclerosis. Only half of these pigs were found to have atherosclerosis providing strong evidence that vitamin C can reverse existing disease. In the other experiments, groups of guinea pigs that are given almost 10-times the RDA, or roughly 5000 mg of vitamin C, adjusted for body weight, do not exhibit any sign of atherosclerosis.

Willis noted the similarity of the vitamin C deprived pig’s atherosclerotic lesions to the human lesions, and how unlike these lesions are to the “fatty streaks” that can be created in experimental animals fed ultra-high cholesterol diets.

From this experiment we know that a single factor, low vitamin C, can cause the atherosclerosis commonly found in humans.

Willis conducted experiments on his patients. He divided patients into two groups. One group was given 500 mg of vitamin C, three times daily. Remarkable for the 1950s, Willis was able to take pictures and “see” the inside of human arteries for the first time. From these pictures, it was determined that 60% of those taking vitamin C improved, that is, their plaques were reduced. In 30% the plaques remained about the same and in 10% he saw their plaques increase slightly. None of the control’s plaques were reduced. These results were promising, Willis in this technique, was well ahead of his time. However, the scientific and medical communities showed little interest in the Willis experiments.

We now know that 1500 mg of vitamin C is not enough. The Lp(a) molecule and its binding sites were unknown and the amino acid lysine was not employed. Also, there was a theoretical problem: All animals have heart beats, but they rarely suffer the same type of CVD as humans. How could the beating heart only cause the disease process in humans? Willis did not have the answer as to why human hearts and vascular systems were so different from most animals.

THE KEY TO THE PUZZLE – Lp(a)

Forty years after the Willis experiments, and after it was discovered that only one form of cholesterol — Lp(a) creates plaques over the arterial lesions [*] , the American Nobel chemist Linus Pauling, and his associate Matthias Rath, MD, formulated a new theory that unified vitamin C and Lp(a).

In their view, the strange Lp(a) molecule explained everything. Lp(a), the friend who may become a foe, has evolved to replace vitamin C only in the very few species that do not make their own vitamin C. The Lp(a) molecule is important for human health, in the absence of vitamin C, providing many of the same functions that the missing vitamin C would have provided.

Now the Willis “problem” had become a cornerstone of their theory: Lp(a) is an evolutionary adaptation or surrogate for low vitamin C which most animals do not require. Lp(a) provides an alternate way to strengthen and stabilize vitamin-starved arteries in species that cannot make the vitamin.

Inside the wall of every blood vessel lies the collagen girder shaped into a triple helix. Wrapped around the artery, like steel buried in a concrete highway, collagen provides the artery with its strength and stability. Collagen is a living tissue and needs to be replenished periodically. If vitamin C is present, collagen will be strengthened before the artery fractures. When vitamin C is not present, collagen continues to deteriorate and the arterial wall weakens. Surface disruptions will emerge, especially where the pulse is great. Strands of lysine and proline become exposed in these “pot-holes” along our most crowded vascular highways. The floating Lp(a) comes to the rescue; it is attracted to lysyl or prolyl strands in the pothole and binds with it, forming a patch, unless — something happens that makes it unattractive.

NULLIFYING THE LYSINE BINDING SITES – REVERSING HEART DISEASE.

As chronic scurvy progresses, the liver produces more Lp(a) molecules. As the number of Lp(a) molecules increases, they tend to deposit on top of existing plaque formations. When the healing process overshoots, the arteries narrow and the flow of blood is reduced.

This problem has a solution. The Lp(a) molecule has a finite number of lysine binding sites – points of attachment to lysine. Pauling’s invention – the cure for heart disease – is to increase the serum concentration of the amino acid lysine enough to make the Lp(a) unattractive. As more lysine enters the bloodstream, the probability increases that floating Lp(a) molecules will bind with it (rather than with the patches of plaques growing on the arterial walls.)

After all the Lp(a) molecule’s binding receptors are filled with the free lysine floating in the blood, the Lp(a) molecule becomes as harmless as ordinary LDL cholesterol.

Pauling and Rath called the substances that treat chronic scurvy and destroy existing plaques Lp(a) binding inhibitors. Vitamin C, to increase collagen production and to improve the health and strength of arteries, and lysine, to prevent and to dissolve Lp(a) plaques, are the primary binding inhibitors. These substances taken together are clinically effective.

Pauling and Rath have been awarded three U. S. patents for Lp(a) binding inhibitors that destroy atherosclerotic plaques in vitro and in vivo. [*]

The Lp(a) binding inhibitors become the Pauling Therapy for heart disease only at high dosages, between vitamin 3 to 18 g ascorbic acid and 3 to 6 g lysine. In his video, Pauling recounts the first cases where his high vitamin C and lysine therapy quickly resolved advanced cardiovascular disease in humans. The effect is so pronounced, and the inhibitors are so nontoxic, that Pauling doubted a clinical study was even necessary.

More than 10-years of consistent testimony[*] demonstrate that Pauling’s recommended dosages of the Lp(a) binding inhibitors are almost always effective reversing advanced heart disease within 10-days after achieving the recommended dosage.

Recently, the amino acid proline was found to be an even more effective Lp(a) binding inhibitor than lysine in vitro. Adding between .5 and 2 g proline may be of significant additional benefit.

When serum Lp(a) is elevated, Lp(a) binding inhibitors can profoundly interfere with the disease process. Binding inhibitor formulas that include proline have been documented to lower Lp(a) in six to 14 months [*]. In cases where Lp(a) is not reduced, binding inhibitors become even more important regardless of their effect on serum Lp(a).

THE BASIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CONTROLLING HEART DISEASE

AUG 2004: UPDATED PROTOCOL HERE
Cardiologists have been kept in the dark about the vitamin C connection. Few cardiovascular drugs benefit heart patients. Several exacerbate heart conditions and should be eliminated in favor of the following orthomolecular protocols:

Take Vitamin C as ascorbic acid or sodium ascorbate up to bowel tolerance (3 to 18 g) daily.

Take Lysine. 2 to 3 g daily for prevention and from 3 to 6 g daily for the greatest therapeutic benefit.

NEW: Eliminate man-made/processed fats, such as trans and hydrogenated fats, and supplement Omega-3 rich oils. “Research has shown that an Omega-3 Index of 8 percent to 10 percent reduces a person’s relative risk of death from coronary heart disease by 40 percent, and from sudden cardiac death by 90 percent.” This benefit probably results from restored insulin-mediated glucose/vitamin C uptake into cells. Note: Following an Atkins-style diet will eliminate most trans fats because these “poisons” appear mostly in processed carbohydrate foods such as cookies, crackers, snacks, etc. Butter is vastly supperior to margarine. Natural saturated fats are vastly superior to any fats or oils processed for longer shelf life.

NEW: Eliminate ordinary sugar and refined carbohydrates. New research confirms Dr. John Ely’s 30-year theory that sugar (glucose) competes with ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) for insulin-mediated uptake into cells. Taking sugar can effectively crowd out the Ascorbate. The effect of the Pauling Therapy is reportedly much more pronounced and immediate when sugar is eliminated.

Take Proline from 250 mg to 2000 mg daily. (This added factor may lower elevated Lp(a) within 6 to 14 months.)

Follow Paulings general heart and cardiovascular recommendations provided in his book HOW TO LIVE LONGER AND FEEL BETTER
Linus Pauling’s Basic Vitamin Program

Vitamin E – 800 to 3200 iu
Vitamin A – 20,000 to 40,000 iu
Super B-Complex, esp. Vitamins B6 and B3

Supplement Coenzyme Q10 (100 – 300 mg) (High vitamin C and several vitamins will help stimulate your own synthesis of CoQ10 which is vital for proper heart function.)

Supplement the mineral Magnesium (300 to 1500 mg) and avoid Manganese (No more than 2 mg. USDA researchers report that elevated manganese, more than 20 mg daily, competes with magnesium uptake in the heart causing irregular heart beats.)

Manganese alters mitochodrial integrity in the hearts of swine marginally deficient in magnesium … These results suggest that high Mn, when fed in combination with low Mg, disrupts mitochondrial ultrastructure and is associated with the sudden deaths previously reported.

Supplement the amino acids Taurine, Arginine and Carnitine (1 to 3 g).

Avoid supplemental calcium.

Add a good mineral/multivitamin – to cover all possible nutritional needs.

The following link to the Pauling Therapy and Video provides the scientific rationale for the Linus Pauling vitamin C/lysine therapy on a 1 hour video:
http://www.paulingtherapy.com

SUMMARY

The unified theory explains that heart disease, as do many natural healing processes, begins only after a stress fracture appears on the wall of an artery. The Lp(a) molecule is attracted to remnants of a broken collagen strand within the fracture. The most probable cause for lesions forming in a pattern so familiar to Willis is the mechanical stress caused by the beating heart. Dr. Willis theorized that heart disease was ultimately a vitamin C deficiency.

Most animals do not have Lp(a) in their blood, Lp(a) acts as a surrogate for vitamin C, extending life in the few species unable to synthesize ascorbate. Lp(a) binds to “lysyl” residues and in this way forms plaque. The Lp(a) molecule itself was discovered circa 1964 and was unknown to Willis. Lp(a) has a similar molecular weight to LDL cholesterol and most studies grouped it with LDL prior to 1989. Recently a reevaluation of these studies found that Lp(a) and not ordinary LDL is highly predictive of CVD and that elevated Lp(a) increases the risk of heart attack and stroke by 70%.

The on-going lack of scientific curiosity or interest by organized medicine in the Pauling/Rath theory and Pauling’s high-dose therapy may well be recognized as the greatest lapse of the 20th century.

I mean this Mercola is getting on my nerves. I thought he was really a guy who has a heart helping people getting their health together.
I think he became a greedy bastard. I think the only thing he wants to do is to sell from his website. I have read comments about how healthy the meat is, and that some people should avoid eating fruit because it makes you fat.

Are you kidding me Mercola, are you totally out of your *censored*ing mind man? Some people should avoid fruit because it affects cholesterol? I am sure if you promote eating fruit you will not sell anything. You will not sell your *censored*ing powders and your crap from your site. The only concern should be to educate people, not to sell them all that crap.

I thought you were an honest person, but you are far from that. Reading some of your articles Mercola is making me sick.
And Mercola even goes to marketing seminars and tries to improve his sales from the website.

I think all his articles are biased because of money. Mercola is a greedy person, a greedy man. I think Curezone is much better reading material as Mercola site.

Here is a proof about how greedy that *censored* really is.

And he just does not look healthy to me. Look at some other health practitioners Mercola and see how they look.
You greedy bastard you should be ashamed of yourself.

Check EFT, how they do business, they are the people you can trust and not you, you are an evil and greedy man, and seems you will die soon because you look sick.

I was shocked, finally the thruth came out. I thought the Curezone was the best health forum on the net. But even on curezone some individuals can become moneygrabbing bastards.
I was a frequent visitor of Torrie (Harley Girls) Dental forum, where she plugged Mexican (holistic dentist) Morales and tried to send as much people to him for holistic dental amalgam removal.

I know amalgam is a poison and it has to be removed but apparently Morales is a crook, and Torrie a sellout. She knew that Morales was a crook and she still refered patients to him, apparently all because of money. Finally he owed her over 30000 usd and she never got payed.

There is a massive fight going on on CUrezoe forums , people are mad about Torrie, she was deleting all the bad posts about Morales and stuff. So is this root canal therapy (hugins theory just a money grabbing idea) It probabl is not, but the thruth has to come out.

Here is the post that some people posted on Curezone regarding Torrie and Morales
Sorry, long post, but… Enough is enough.
I first posted my testimonial regarding Dr. Javier Morales horrible work (in me and my husband) http://curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=1008207#i (please read)
as I kept seeing the insisting propaganda posted for him in this website, and others, (which, I’m sorry to say, but sometimes bordered in some kind of odd Dental Cult).
I don’t want any more people getting hurt unnecessarily!
All the hopeful people, some of them with terrible diseases, that come to cure zone in search of advice (many times generously provided), and have been manipulated and mislead into getting treatment with this person (Morales)… If you are dealing with a very delicate matter, please be careful before following somebody’s advice. Is this person really an expert in the subject? Or is he/she selling something? Etc.
– This post is NOT just based on my opinion, but in facts. The treatment I actually had done at Morales office, the advertisement about him in this website. The deceiving advice provided by a person that knows all the facts.

I have to post again because It breaks my heart to think that Torrie Crocker, consultant (“Aharleygyrl”), as admitted by herself, KNEW about many patients complains (that she covered up), about what she described as Morales “laziness”, poor quality work and EVEN apparent drug use, “COKEHEAD” (in her own words), and even so, kept referring patients to him! SHE KNEW, BUT DIDN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT…
Oh wait!… Actually she did.
– She acknowledges having worked for him for about 5 years, which gave her the chance to see and hear many really “bad things” along the way (drug use?), her own dental work by him being HORRIBLE (loosing teeth even), etc.
– She says she stayed around because the guy stopped paying lately and owed her 30 000 for her very good services, as she was the one that brought in all the patients from the US, using this and other websites, for which she was paid 10%…
What else did she do?

– According to her own story, she ERASED many posts, proof, any evidence offered by other people’s testimonials (like mine) criticizing the Dr. here and in other websites. She also erased or changed her own confessions, which mutate constantly according to her own interests…. (As other people do, I’ve been forced to keep my own record of Torrie’s confessions, as they tend to disappear…)
– To this blatant destruction of the truth, her own and others, she responds with: “he (Morales) made me do it” or “the webmaster did it”, as if this would erase her own responsibility as well…

I won’t say anything about the reasons she had to work for 5 YEARS with a (again her own words) “sociopath” (interesting…) “cokehead”, that was making A LOT of “mistakes” and treated her “like a dog” … I’ll leave that to somebody who has a specialty in Psychology.

What I can say is that there is no excuse for what she has done keeping up the advertisements and referring patients for all this years, to a person SHE KNEW was nothing like the “savior” she presented in her propaganda machine. What’s more, I see no remorse, no regret, no respect, towards the people she sent to this guy and suffered the consequences. Scary.

I feel for Torrie, I really do, and I told her so in the e-mail I sent to her in the hope of collecting the truth about Morales. I feel for her history and the damage (obviously) Mercury did to her. And I feel for her because she doesn’t seem to be able to be an adult. Torrie:
No, it is not other people’s fault.

No, it is not the webmaster responsibility either.
No, it is not a plot to destroy you, or “personal attacks” from “people that hate you”.
This is a serious issue, where you ARE PERSONALLY INVOLVED, due to your OWN choices, decisions and behavior. They all have consequences!

Torrie, please take this a wake up call. Be the “savior” of your own life. Take responsibility for your acts, each and every one of them. You cannot spend your life blaming other people for your mistakes. Try and see if you can connect on an emotional level to the suffering of the people you sent to Morales. The damage for a lot of us is already done, but it would help your own healing to acknowledge your participation in these events and to stop detaching yourself and playing the victim.

It would greatly benefit your peace of mind, your growth as a human being, your pursuit of happiness, or your quest for health, which is all I wish to you and the people in this forum.

Peace.

Here is the article from some guy on curezone forums. I find it really interesting. So make sure you read it carefully.

Kids have perfect curls, perfect waves, perfect straight hair. even if it’s messed up it still looks perfect, not a hair out of place. it just works for them, you know? lol!!

but you know WHY it works for them? heres why:

like anything that seems like age the answer is TOXINS! if you detox your scalp you will have perfect hair, just like you had when you were a kid. you know why? because ‘perfect’ is how nature intended it – and when you restore it to its natural state by removing toxins, this is how it will be!

this is how i did it:

1. throw away all commercial products.

even if they say ‘natural’. they still have chemicals in them, even if not ‘proven’ carcinogenic, harmful etc. your body still has to get rid of them. kids bodies are much more efficient at getting rid of toxins – their bodies are ‘the latest models’, clean and functional. ours are like models that date back to the decade we were born. like an electrical appliance from the 80s, 70s, 60s…you know what i mean?! 2. wash hair with all natural, handmade, organic vegetable soap.

i got best results with olive oil soap. make sure it has no Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) in it! as imalurnin kindly informed me, SLS blocks your skin and means it is unable to get rid of toxins. if it doesnt specifically list the ingredients, dont use it. it must be 100% natural, the less things added the better. or, make your own. once you have detoxed successfully im sure you can start using soap with essential oils or msm added, though i would always alternate with a nothing-added soap to give your scalp a chance to detox.

your hair may become heavy, dull, oily for a few days. vinegar rinsing may help for a while but it may still seem to become resistant to washing, being difficult to get wet and difficult to get soap into. this is good news! it means its detoxing and you can help speed this process up by….

3. doing an olive oil scalp detox!

pour olive oil directly onto scalp skin. (if you try to apply with fingers it will only get stuck in the lengths and you will have to use twice as much). it seems like you will use a lot, just pouring it on your head, but trust me its the best way (ive tried both!) and you dont actually end up using that much. massage oil in with fingertips. ensure all skin of head is covered in oil. pay no attention to the lengths, they are not important to this step! wrap hair in towel (i did it turban style with good results) and leave overnight.

when you wake up in the morning your head will feel so fresh you will be amazed!! you really will! and you will finally understand how bad SLS clogs your skin! your hair will immediately be easier to wash, more manageable, softer and cleaner (even though it will still have oil all over it!). wash hair with your chosen natural soap. your hair will remain oily for a few days as it detoxes so best to do this over a weekend or when you can hole up at home for a while!

4. keep washing with your chosen soap…

…and you will see your hair gradually returning to its natural glory. you will see you hair become stronger, thicker, shinier as the natural oils can finally be distributed from your newly unclogged scalp lol!! your hair will be so managable, soft and will fall into its natural shape so easily. it may take a couple weeks to start seeing the best results, but slowly your hair will become as perfect as kids hair, without doing a single thing to it!

no more styling, straightening, curling, hairspray, hair gel, fluffing, smoothing or scrunching!!!! you will not even need a hairdryer any more! your beauty routine will be cut in half: just wash with soap, comb, and go!!!

im starting to sound like a commercial!!! but really, its simple enough to try for yourself to see how amazing it is (as long as you can tolerate bad hair during the detox!!)

make sure you use cold pressed, organic, unrefined olive oil though!

good luck and i hope you see your hair become so naturally beautiful, just like how it should be!!!

The following article is really interesting. Leaky gut syndrome is a disorder where the intestinal lining is more porous then the normal one. All the toxic material reenters into the body and causes all sort of troubles and diseases. Leaky gut syndrome allows all the bacteria, viruses, digested stuff that body want to eliminate to be absorb back into the body. It is almost always related with auto immune diseases like lupus, alopecia areata, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, vitiligo, thyroiditis, vasculitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, urticaria (hives), diabetes and Raynaud’s disease. Learn more in the following article:

Altered Immunity & Leaky Gut Syndrome

The leaky gut syndrome is the name given to a very common health disorder in which the basic organic defect (lesion) is an intestinal lining which is more permeable (porous) than normal. The abnormally large spaces present between the cells of the gut wall allow the entry of toxic material into the bloodstream that would, in healthier circumstances, be repelled and eliminated.

The gut becomes leaky in the sense that bacteria, fungi, parasites and their toxins, undigested protein, fat and waste normally not absorbed into the bloodstream in the healthy state, pass through a damaged, hyperpermeable, porous or “leaky” gut. This can be verified by special gut permeability urine tests, microscopic examination of the lining of the intestinal wall as well as the bloodstream with phase contrast or darkfield microscopy of living whole blood.

Why is The Leaky Gut Syndrome Important?

The leaky gut syndrome is almost always associated with autoimmune disease and reversing autoimmune disease depends on healing the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Any other treatment is just symptom suppression. An autoimmune disease is defined as one in which the immune system makes antibodies against its own tissues. Diseases in this category include lupus, alopecia areata, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, vitiligo, thyroiditis, vasculitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, urticaria (hives), diabetes and Raynaud’s disease. Physicians are increasingly recognizing the importance of the gastrointestinal tract in the development of allergic or autoimmune disease. Understanding the leaky gut phenomenon not only helps us see why allergies and autoimmune diseases develop but also helps us with safe and effective therapies to bring the body back into balance.

Due to the enlarged spaces between the cells of the gut wall, larger than usual protein molecules are absorbed before they have a chance to be completely broken down as occurs when the intestinal lining is intact. The immune system starts making antibodies against these larger molecules because it recognizes them as foreign, invading substances. The immune system starts treating them as if they had to be destroyed. Antibodies are made against these proteins derived from previously harmless foods.

Human tissues have antigenic sites very similar to those on foods, bacteria, parasites, candida or fungi. The antibodies created by the leaky gut phenomenon against these antigens can get into various tissues and trigger an inflammatory reaction when the corresponding food is consumed or the microbe is encountered. Autoantibodies are thus created and inflammation becomes chronic. If this inflammation occurs in a joint, autoimmune arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis) develops. If it occurs in the brain, myalgic encephalomyelitis (a.k.a. chronic fatigue syndrome) may be the result. If it occurs in the blood vessels, vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels) is the resulting autoimmune problem.

If the antibodies end up attacking the lining of the gut itself, the result may be colitis or Crohn’s disease. If it occurs in the lungs, asthma is triggered on a delayed basis every time the individual consumes the food which triggered the production of the antibodies in the first place. It is easy to see that practically any organ or body tissue can become affected by food allergies created by the leaky gut. Symptoms, especially those seen in conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, can be multiple and severely debilitating.

The inflammation that causes the leaky gut syndrome also damages the protective coating of antibodies of the IgA family normally present in a healthy gut. Since IgA helps us ward off infections, with leaky gut problems we become less resistant to viruses, bacteria, parasites and candida. These microbes are then able to invade the bloodstream and colonize almost any body tissue or organ. When this occurs in the gums, periodontal disease results. If it happens in the jaw, tooth extraction or root canals might be necessary to cure the infection.

In addition to the creation of food allergies by the leaky gut, the bloodstream is invaded by bacteria, fungi and parasites that, in the healthy state, would not penetrate the protective barrier of the gut. These microbes and their toxins, if present in large enough amounts, can overwhelm the liver’s ability to detoxify. This results in symptoms such as confusion, memory loss, brain fog or facial swelling when the individual is exposed to a perfume or to cigarette smoke that he or she had no adverse reactions to prior to the development of the leaky gut syndrome.

Leaky gut syndrome also creates a long list of mineral deficiencies because the various carrier proteins present in the gastrointestinal tract that are needed to transport minerals from the intestine to the blood are damaged by the inflammation process. For example, magnesium deficiency (low red blood cell magnesium) is quite a common finding in conditions like fibromyalgia despite a high magnesium intake through the diet and supplementation. If the carrier protein for magnesium is damaged, magnesium deficiency develops as a result of malabsorption. Muscle pain and spasms can occur as a result. Similarly, zinc deficiency due to malabsorption can result in hair loss or baldness as occurs in alopecia areata. Copper deficiency can occur in an identical way leading to high blood cholesterol levels and osteoarthritis. Further, bone problems develop as a result of the malabsorption of calcium, boron, silicon and manganese.

The Causes

The leaky gut syndrome is basically caused by inflammation of the gut lining. This inflammation is usually brought about by the following:

· Antibiotics because they lead to the overgrowth of abnormal flora in the gastrointestinal tract (bacteria, parasites, candida, fungi) · Alcohol and caffeine (strong gut irritants)
· Foods and beverages contaminated by parasites like giardia lamblia, cryptosporidium, blastocystis hominis and others
· Foods and beverages contaminated by bacteria like helicobacter pylori, klebsiella,
· citrobacter, pseudomonas and others
· Chemicals in fermented and processed food (dyes, preservatives, peroxidized fats) · Enzyme deficiencies (e.g. celiac disease, lactase deficiency causing lactose intolerance)
· NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ASA, ibuprofen, indomethacin,
· Prescription corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone)
· High refined carbohydrate diet (e.g. candy bars, cookies, cake, soft drinks, white
· bread) Prescription hormones like the birth control pill Mold and fungal mycotoxins in stored grains, fruit and refined carbohydrates.

The leaky gut syndrome can cause the malabsorption of many important micronutrients. The inflammatory process causes swelling (edema) and the presence of many noxious chemicals all of which can block the absorption of vitamins and essential amino acids. A leaky gut does not absorb nutrients properly. Bloating, gas and cramps occur as do a long list of vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Eventually, systemic complaints like fatigue, headaches, memory loss, poor concentration or irritability develop.

Prescription broad spectrum antibiotics, especially when taken for extended periods of time, wipe out all the gut friendly bacteria that provide protection against fungi and amoebic (parasitic) infections, help the body break down complex foods and synthesize vitamins like B12 and biotin. Since this friendly bowel flora is killed off, the body now has no local defence against the parasites or fungi that are normally held in check. This then causes an inflammatory reaction leading to the leaky gut syndrome. Food allergies quickly develop and these may trigger the signs and symptoms of arthritis, eczema, migraines, asthma or other forms of immune dysfunction. Other common symptoms of this bowel flora imbalance and leaky gut syndrome are bloating and gas after meals and alternating constipation with diarrhea. This set of symptoms is usually labelled as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) or spastic bowel disease and treated symptomatically by general practitioners and gastroenterologists with antispasmodic drugs, tranquilizers or different types of soluble (psyllium) and insoluble (bran) fiber.

The Leaky Gut and IBS

The mainstream thinking on IBS is that it is caused by stress. Irritable bowel syndrome is the number one reason for general practitioner referrals to specialists. In well over 80% of the cases, tests like the intestinal permeability test (a special urine test involving the determination of absorption rates of two sugars called lactulose and mannitol), CDSA or livecell darkfield microscopy reveal the presence of an overgrowth of fungi, parasites or pathogenic bacteria. The one-celled parasite, blastocystis hominis and different species of candida are the most common microbes seen in IBS. The only stress associated with IBS is that which is generated by infection and the leaky gut syndrome. If allowed to persist without the correct treatment, IBS can progress into more serious disorders like the candidiasis syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivities, chronic fatigue syndrome, many autoimmune diseases and even cancer. If treated medically, IBS is rarely cured. To treat it correctly, natural treatments work best and must include the removal of the cause, improvement of gastrointestinal function and healing the lining of the gut.

How to Reverse Leaky Gut Syndrome

Band-aid treatments with corticosteroids, prescription antibiotics and immuno suppressive drugs may be temporarily life-saving for acute episodes of pain, bleeding or severe inflammation as occurs in lupus or colitis. In the long run, however, none of these treatments do anything to heal the leaky gut problem. To reverse the leaky gut syndrome the diet must be completely changed to one which is as hypoallergenic as possible. Sugar, white flour products, all gluten-containing grains (especially wheat, barley, oats and rye), milk and dairy products, high fat foods, caffeine products, alcohol and hidden food allergies determined by testing must all be eliminated for long periods of time (several years in the most severe cases).

Treatment might also include the use of natural antibiotics (echinacea, colloidal silver, garlic), antiparasitics (cloves, wormwood, black walnut) and antifungals (taheebo, caprylic acid, grapefruit seed extract) depending on the type of infection which shows up on objective tests. It is rare that victims require prescription drugs for these infections and they should be discouraged. The drugs are usually expensive, have unpleasant side effects and are best reserved for life-threatening conditions.

Leaky gut syndrome patients can help themselves by chewing their food more thoroughly, following the basic rules of food combining, eating frequent small meals rather than three large ones and taking more time with their meals. Gastrointestinal function can be improved with a juice fast or a hypoallergenic diet and supplements like lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus as well as FOS (fructooligosaccharides) derived from Jerusalem artichoke, chicory, the dahlia plant or burdock root.

Beneficial Supplements for Leaky Gut Syndrome

Natural digestive enzymes – from plant (e,g, bromelain, papain) or pancreatic animal tissues (porcine, bovine, lamb) and aloe vera juice with a high MPS concentration (good brands are International Aloe, Earthnet and Royal) stomach acidity enhancing supplements – betaine and pepsin, glutamic acid, stomach bitters, apple cider vinegar amino acids – L-glutamine, N-acetyl-glucosamine (NAG) essential fatty acids – milled flax, flax seed oil, evening primrose oil, borage oil, olive oil, fish oils, black currant seed oil soluble fiber – psyllium seed husks and powder, apple or citrus pectin, the rice derived gamma oryzanol, antioxidants – carotenoids, B complex, vitamin C, E, zinc, selenium, germanium, Coenzyme Q10, bioflavonoids, especially quercetin, catechin, hesperidin, rutin and proanthocyanidins (pycnogenols, grape seed extract, pine bark extract, bilberry) herbs and plant extracts – kudzu, various high chlorophyll containing green drinks like spirulina, chlorella and blue green algae, burdock, slippery elm, Turkish rhubarb, sheep sorrel, licorice root, ginger root, goldenseal, bismuth and bentonite. Combination Green Foods – two excellent products are Green Life (Bioquest) and Greens Plus (Supplements Plus)

Due to the increasing recognition of chronic fatigue syndrome, the leaky gut syndrome and multiple chemical sensitivity, a number of supplement companies have been marketing powdered hypoallergenic formulations containing most of the nutrients mentioned above in one convenient package. Some brand names include Ultrabalance®, UltraClear Sustain®, UltraClear Plus®, Pro-Cleanse®, Pro-Support® and ActiClear®. The products are only available through natural health care practitioners like chiropractors, nutritional doctors and naturopaths. If you suspect you may be suffering from leaky gut syndrome, the most important thing to do is get yourself tested by a natural health care practitioner. A personalized natural program of diet and supplements can then be instituted to help you reverse this debilitating condition.

Every few weeks I visit sauna. It is not just a one hour thing staying in sauna. I stay inside sauna for few hours. Few hours before finish sauna I take vitamins and minerals and not just one tablet – MORE. I have studied the theory that Tom Cruise said it works. It is all about flushing the toxins with the help of sauna, old medicine we took years before out of our body. I talked with some of the people and they told me remarkable stories how they saw that the color for coloring the hair was pouring out of their skin years after they stopped using it, and also how they felt better after they flushed the medicines out of the body that they took many years before. I firmly believe that all these medicines are still lodged inside our tissues and just stays there for ever. They are causing diseases. The body just can not flush them out. So sauna can help in that way – flushing out. It can be finnish sauna, infrared sauna, turkish sauna. I will not go into scientology theory but this sauna program I really like. It sounds great and I am not a scientologist, just a natural health researcher. So someday I will definitely have my own sauna so I won’t visit the public saunas anymore. The most important thing is to take a lot of vitamins, I am talking overdosing here J (I mean take 5, 6 or more tablets of each vitamin and drink it few hours before going into sauna). I will write more about sauna from my experience next time. Read the whole article about benefits of sauna:

The people of Finland aren’t the only folks who know about the tremendous benefits of sauna therapy. Around the world, doctors, researchers and other professionals have discovered the great value of utilizing sauna heat to stimulate the immune system, help increase the body’s white blood cell count, facilitate detoxification, and produce a state of general relaxation that is essential to the healing process. In various countries, experts continue to research the therapeutic properties of the sauna.

In Japan, for example, studies by Dr. Chuwa Tei, professor of medicine and chairman of the department of internal medicine at Kagoshima University, and his colleagues have demonstrated saunas’ usefulness in treating heart patients.

In one study, Tei and his colleagues examined 25 men with at least one coronary risk factor, such as high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes or smoking, and a control group of 10 healthy men without risk factors. Once daily for two weeks, the researchers gave the experimental group a 15-minute, 140-degree Fahrenheit far infrared sauna bath followed by 30 minutes in bed covered in blankets. They then employed ultrasound technology to assess the functioning of the participants’ vascular endothelium, the thin layer of cells that lines the interior of blood vessels. The treatment significantly improved the vascular endothelial function in the patients in the experimental group, which greatly pleased the researchers since endothelial dysfunction is believed to be the first step toward the narrowing of the arteries known as atherosclerosis.

In earlier studies, Tei and his colleagues demonstrated that sauna therapy increased endothelial function in hamsters with chronic heart failure. The sauna therapy also prolonged the life of the hamsters by three weeks, compared to the hamsters who did not receive sauna therapy.

German researchers recently studied 22 kindergarten children who took weekly sauna baths and compared them with a control group that did not take any sauna baths. The children were followed for 18 months, and a careful record was made of their incidence of ear infections, colds, and upper respiratory problems. Children who didn’t take the sauna baths suffered from twice the number of sick days as their counterparts.

Other findings suggest that it may be more than just the heat of a sauna that is so advantageous to human health. Research has shown that an abundance of negative ions in the air we breathe is highly beneficial, while a lack of ions or a higher ratio of positive to negative ions can cause physical harm. Tests have indicated that the practice of splashing water on heated rocks in a traditional Finnish sauna produces a high quantity of negative ions.
And while The St. Petersburg Times quotes Dr. Timothy Meade, a U.S.-educated doctor who works as regional director for the American Medical Center in the Russian city, as saying, “I don’t think studies have been done where 10 Russians take a banya every day for 20 years and 10 Russian people don’t,” the newspaper does state that “almost anyone who experiences the banya will tell you that there is a certain deeply felt sense of healthiness – what the Russians refer to as a kaif or high – after a couple of hours” in the sauna bath.

Throughout Finland, Sweden, Japan, China, Germany, Russia, Canada, the U.S., and numerous other countries of the world, much evidence and countless personal experiences exist to substantiate the widely held conviction that regular sauna bathing can be both effective therapy for people suffering from conditions and afflictions like hypertension and arthritis and a powerful preventative aid against colds, flu and other health threats.

No matter where you may live, if you are sick and want to get healthy or if you are healthy and want to remain that way, speak to a qualified health professional about the magnificent merits of the sauna bath. Countless studies agree that you can feel better and heal better in the soothing warmth of a sauna.

Pertti Olavi Jalasjaa is the Finnish-born author of “The Art of Sauna Building,” an acclaimed reference book on sauna construction.

(I think this stuff that Hulda is talking about might be true. Here are some teachings from her – Bob Vaughan. The products for body hygiene are really toxic so watch out.) We are living in a very fortunate time. We are not expected to all look alike! The 60’s brought us this wonderful freedom. Freedom to dress in a variety of styles, use make-up or no make-up, jewelry or no jewelry, any kind of hair style, any kind of shoes.
You will need to go off every cosmetic and body product that you are now using. Not a single one can be continued. They are full of titanium, zirconium, benzalkonium, bismuth, antimony (30), barium (31), strontium (32), aluminum, tin, chromium, not to mention pollution solvents such as benzene and PCBs. Do not use any commercial salves, ointments, lotions, colognes, perfumes, massage oils, deodorant, mouthwash, toothpaste, even when touted as “herbal” and health-food type. See Recipes for homemade substitutes.

People are trying desperately to use less toxic products. They seek health for themselves. So they reach for products that just list herbs and other natural ingredients. Unfortunately, the buyers are being duped. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires all body products to have sufficient antiseptic in them. Some of these antiseptics are substances you must avoid! But you won’t see them on the label because manufacturers prefer to use quantities below the levels they must disclose.

And by using a variety of antiseptics in these small amounts they can still meet sterility requirements.
The only ingredient you might see is “grapefruit seed” or similar healthy-sounding natural antiseptic. This is sad for the consumer of health food varieties.

Some of the unnatural chemicals listed are present because of residues in the manufacturing process, but others you will actually see listed on the label!

Propyl alcohol and wood alcohol are present because the tubing used to fill the bottles is sterilized and cleaned with them. Ice cream machines are “oiled” with a gel containing petroleum products. This could explain why one always find benzene in ice cream.
Note: HEAVY DUTY SANITARY LUBRICANT. The text on the containers reads… for food machinery use… odorless, tasteless, water-resistant, chemically stable, non-corrosive, rust protection.

How can propyl alcohol in shampoo get into your body in significant amounts? The skin is more absorbent than we realize, and time and time again I see cancer victims who have gone off every body product except their favorite shampoo. They harbor propyl alcohol until they make that final sacrifice. It is better, to switch shampoos than to not need any due to radiation and chemotherapy!
See Recipes for easy-to-make, natural cosmetics. But you might consider just stopping them all. Especially if you’re going on vacation.
Use nothing that you wouldn’t use on a new-born baby. This is a permissive age. You will be the only one feeling “naked.” Others won’t even notice. Don’t forget advertising is aimed at you, even if other people’s eyes are not!
Don’t even use soap unless it is homemade soap (see Recipes) or borax straight from the box. Borax was the traditional pioneer soap. It is antibacterial and can be made into a solution. It is also a water softener and is the main ingredient in nonchlorine bleach. Borax can remove grease, too, and some stains. But even borax is not natural to your body and it is therefore wise to use as little as necessary. See Recipes for antibacterial borax soap.

Floss has mercury antiseptics (with thallium pollution!). Throw away your old toothbrush-solvents don’t wash away.

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic researchers have found that the cause of chronic sinus infections lies in the nasal mucus — the snot — not in the nasal and sinus tissue targeted by standard treatment. The findings will be published in the August issue of Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and are available online.”This strikingly teaches against what has been thought worldwide about the origin of a chronic sinus infection: that inflammatory cells break down, releasing toxic proteins into the diseased airway tissue,” says lead researcher and Mayo Clinic ear, nose and throat specialist Jens Ponikau, M.D. “Instead we found that these toxic proteins are released into the mucus, and not in the tissue.

Therefore, scientists might need to take not only the tissue but also the mucus into account when trying to understand what causes chronic sinus infections and probably other airway diseases.”

The findings could significantly change the way chronic sinus infection is treated, according to Dr. Ponikau.
“This has far-reaching implications,” says Dr. Ponikau. “This suggests a beneficial effect in treatments that target primarily the underlying and presumably damage-inflicting nasal and sinus membrane inflammation, instead of the secondary bacterial infection that has been the primary target of treatments for the disease. Also, some surgeons have already started to change the way they do surgery for patients with chronic sinus infections, focusing now on removing the mucus, which is loaded with toxins from the inflammatory cells, rather than the tissue during surgery. Leaving the mucus behind might predispose patients for early recurrence of the chronic sinus infection.”

Dr. Ponikau conducted this research along with Hirohito Kita, M.D., and Gail Kephart, Mayo Clinic allergic diseases researchers. David Sherris, M.D., and Eugene Kern, M.D., both former Mayo Clinic ear, nose and throat specialists who now work at the University at Buffalo, also participated in the project.

The team found that in chronic sinus infection patients, activated white blood cells (eosinophils) cluster in the nasal and sinus mucus and scatter a toxic protein (major basic protein) onto the nasal and sinus membrane. While major basic protein was not distributed in the nasal and sinus tissue, the level of this protein in the mucus of chronic sinus infection patients far exceeded that needed to damage the nasal and sinus membranes and make them more susceptible to infections such as chronic sinus infection.

To conduct this investigation, Dr. Ponikau and fellow researchers collected specimens from 22 consecutive Mayo Clinic chronic sinus infection patients undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery. The surgeons extracted the maximum possible tissue and mucus during the sinus surgery. The surgeons also extracted tissue and mucus from healthy patients undergoing septoplasty, surgery to fix a deviated septum, for comparison with the specimens from the chronic sinus infection patients. Through various forms of laboratory examination of the tissue and attached mucus, the investigators observed an abundance of major basic protein throughout the nasal and sinus mucus in all 22 specimens, but not in the tissue.

Chronic sinus infection is one of the most common chronic diseases in the United States, affecting 32 million adults, according to the National Center of Health Statistics. Chronic sinus infection produces nose and sinus problems characterized by a stuffy nose, loss of sense of smell, postnasal drip, nasal discharge, and head and face pain lasting three months or longer. It notably decreases the quality of patients’ lives, impairing physical and social functioning, vitality and general health, according to the Mayo Clinic researchers.

You can make your kitchen a cleaner, safer place and fight bacteria, without exposing yourself and your family to toxic chemicals that also damage the environment. You can use a simple safe disinfecting spray that is more effective than any of the commercial cleaners in killing bacteria. As a bonus, it is inexpensive! Susan Sumner, a food scientist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, worked out the recipe for just such a sanitizing combo. All you need is three percent hydrogen peroxide, the same strength available at the drug store for gargling or disinfecting wounds, and plain white or apple cider vinegar, and a pair of brand new clean sprayers, like the kind you use to dampen laundry before ironing.

If you’re cleaning vegetables or fruit, just spritz them well first with both the vinegar and the hydrogen peroxide, and then rinse them off under running water.

It doesn’t matter which you use first – you can spray with the vinegar then the hydrogen peroxide, or with the hydrogen peroxide followed by the vinegar. You won’t get any lingering taste of vinegar or hydrogen peroxide, and neither is toxic to you if a small amount remains on the produce.

As a bonus: The paired sprays work exceptionally well in sanitizing counters and other food preparation surfaces — including wood cutting boards.

In tests run at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, pairing the two mists killed virtually all Salmonella, Shigella, or E. coli bacteria on heavily contaminated food and surfaces when used in this fashion, making this spray combination more effective at killing these potentially lethal bacteria than chlorine bleach or any commercially available kitchen cleaner.
The best results came from using one mist right after the other – it is 10 times more effective than using either spray by itself and more effective than mixing the vinegar and hydrogen peroxide in one sprayer.

Author Marica Angell says her research shows their huge influence over Congress, the FDA, and doctors is harming Americans. After she stepped down in June, 2000, as interim editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine ( NEJM ), Dr. Marcia Angell decided to write a book about biases in clinical trials. As she was doing her research and writing, she realized that “all roads led back to drug companies.” Angell decided there was a bigger story to tell — about the vast influence the pharmaceutical industry has over how medicine is practiced today.
During her 20-year career at NEJM , Angell had watched drugmakers expand their sway. They became the main sponsors of clinical testing and physician education and are also a critical source of funding for the Food & Drug Administration. “I finally decided just to bite the bullet and write about [the industry].” The result is The Truth about Drug Companies: How They Deceive Us and What to Do About It , which arrives in bookstores in late August.

The book provides a detailed account of the intimate interconnections between drug companies and every other player in the health field — including medical journals, doctors, government agencies, Congress, universities — and how such relationships harm the public. Dr. Angell recently spoke with BusinessWeek Online reporter Amy Tsao . Edited excerpts of their conversation follow:

Q: You give a very troubling account of the drug industry’s practices. What, in your view, are the big truths that it doesn’t want the public to understand?

A: I would say they’re threefold. One, they spend relatively little on R&D — less than they make in profits and far less than they spend on marketing and administration. What the industry does is essentially to blackmail the public. It says: “We’re the source of your miracles, of your innovative drugs, and therefore don’t mess with us.”

The second truth is that they’re not particularly innovative. Their major product is “me-too” drugs — and even the innovative drugs that they do produce are almost always based on research that has been done at taxpayer expense [and] funded by the NIH [National Institutes of Health].

The third truth is that they have pretty much had their own way because of their control and influence over the institutions in society that really ought to be checking them. They have pretty much bought and paid for Congress. They have a lot of influence over the FDA through user fees they pay [to have their drugs reviewed by the agency], and they have way too much influence over doctors and the medical profession generally.

Q: You mentioned that in other countries drug companies can sell medication for a profit, [but] there are price controls. What’s the difference between the profit margins in the U.S. vs. countries where there are price controls?

A: I don’t know the answer to that. That’s another way they’re very secretive. We do know that they make a profit in other countries because they aren’t charities. They don’t give drugs away. But let’s assume that they did.

Look at the year 2002 , when the profit margin for the 10 [drug] companies on the Fortune 500 list was 17% of sales, and sales in this country amounted to about half of their worldwide sales. You can calculate even if they made no profit whatsoever in the rest of the world, they would still come out with at least an 8.5% profit margin. And that would be higher than the median of the other Fortune 500 companies that year, which was 3.1%.

Q: What role should physicians play in curbing some of the industry’s marketing influence?

A: I think my harshest criticism, perhaps, was not for the industry but for my fellow physicians and the medical profession. After all, the industry is in business to make money, but that isn’t what doctors and medical schools should be doing. They don’t have to be in bed with the drug companies. But they are.

Drug companies finance most of the continuing medical education of doctors, as well as meetings of professional societies. They lavish all manner of gifts on doctors in practice, including dinners in luxurious restaurants and trips (ostensibly for educational purposes) to exotic resorts. And they provide speakers and meals for interns and residents in teaching hospitals.

The profession should acknowledge that this is all a form of marketing, which adds to the prices of prescription drugs. Doctors should take responsibility for their own education and buy their own meals.

Q: What about medical journals? Are enough safeguards in place to make sure that the right research is published?

A: There are two issues in that question. One, is the research valid, and can we trust it? And I’m concerned that increasingly, we can’t — that the sponsors introduce all kinds of bias in the designs and analyses of the study and that some of the more interesting data are suppressed.

The second issue is whether journals are publishing the most medically and scientifically important research or whether they’re publishing studies that are preferentially favorable to the industry. The answer depends a lot on the journal.

I don’t think the big distinguished journals, the reputable journals, like the New England Journal of Medicine or the Journal of the American Medical Assn. are selecting papers to publish because they’re favorable to sponsors. Not at all. [But] I think many journals are publishing papers that are favorable to the industry because they’re totally dependent on the industry for advertising revenues.

Q: We’re seeing many individuals — even whole states — buying drugs from abroad. What will be the impact of this?

A: I think the industry is going to use trade agreements to force other countries to let their prices rise. This is something that Mark McClellan, former FDA commissioner, talked about last year. Already, a recent trade agreement with Australia was designed to do that, and it gives the drug companies the right to prevent importing drugs from Australia. I think the intention is for other bilateral trade agreements do the same thing.

The real answer is to regulate prices here in some way, not to require them to go up [elsewhere].

 Q: Is that a possibility?

A: Not as long as the pharmaceutical industry has the largest lobby in Washington and contributes so generously to political campaigns.

 Q: What about legislative solutions?

A: The most important and most doable solution in many ways is to require that companies, to get FDA approval, have to compare [the new product] with older drugs already in the market, not just with placebos. The new drug should be shown to be superior in some way to existing treatments — more effective, safer, or substantially more convenient. This would pull the rug out from the me-too industry.

Q: What about the recent talk of clinical-trial registries. Is that a solution?

A: All clinical trials should be registered in one central place. It should be a condition of enrolling human subjects. After all, human subjects don’t sign onto clinical trials just for fun. They are hoping that this will yield knowledge. If that knowledge is suppressed, then they’ve been used in a misleading way.

Research must be registered, and it should be done so at the inception of the study. The reason for registering it at the beginning is that it doesn’t allow companies to shift the goal post as the trial goes on.

Q: What can individuals do to fight back?

A: One recommendation is to be aware that this industry speaks through many voices, and whenever anyone makes a pronouncement about drug prices or anything else dealing with prescription drugs, people ought to ask themselves if there is a conflict of interest. Often there is.

Patients have to become much more skeptical about claims that drugs will cure whatever ails them. There’s reason to believe that some new drugs are not nearly as good as they’re claimed to be, that doctors believe the claims as much as their patients do, and we have to remember that almost any drug has a risk of side effects. This isn’t to say that there aren’t important drugs on the market. They can be very helpful and even lifesaving.

I’m not trying to say never take a drug — but I’m saying that people should be reluctant to take drugs unless they’re pretty sure that they’re needed.

WEST COLUMBIA , S.C. — When Katherine Bibeau’s body arrived at the morgue, she was covered in large, deep purplish-black bruises. But the woman had not been abused, Gary Watts discovered. She had bled internally, and massively, after receiving an unconventional aid for multiple sclerosis. Intravenous infusions of hydrogen peroxide, applied by a physician named James Shortt, had produced bubbles in Bibeau’s bloodstream that caused organ failure and cardiac arrest. This case and the death of another of his infusion patients have put Shortt at the center of a controversy over a treatment that its opponents say has no proven benefits and serious risks.

Some 150,000 infusions of the chemical are given each year across the nation as a treatment for a variety of diseases.

Shortt, who is fighting to keep his medical license, denies harming anybody. “I might be the world’s greatest lunatic,” he says, but “I’m not going to do anything to my patients that I think might hurt them.”

At the root of hydrogen peroxide’s purported power is the same action that makes it foam when placed on a cut. Proponents of oxidative or “hyperoxygenation” therapy believe that many diseases — including cancer and HIV — can be linked to oxygen deficiency. They say that infusion or even ingestion of substances such as hydrogen peroxide, ozone and germanium sesquioxide deliver an “oxidative burst” that can kill cancer cells and viruses, and encourage the immune system.

Shortt says he has been a believer since infusion guru Dr. Charles Farr helped him save a lupus patient’s blackened toes from amputation.

Shortt says he has administered as many as 1,800 hydrogen peroxide treatments to patients from all over the world, and has seen people in the midst of severe asthma attacks during an infusion.

On a recent day at his clinic, Health Dimensions, patients occupied two of the dozen black leather chaises arranged in a spacious lounge off the waiting room. They watched videos as IV bags of yellowish and clear liquid emptied slowly into veins in their left hands.

Many of his patients, Shortt says, come to him when modern medicine has no effect.

“We go to work from this point where you’re hopeless,” the 58-year-old said in a recent telephone interview.

But health experts say injecting hydrogen peroxide directly into the bloodstream can cause convulsions, anemia and deadly gas emboli.

Katherine Bibeau, a 53-year-old mother of two from Cottage Grove , Minn. , was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the year 2001.

The gardener and baker, whom husband, David, has described as “June Cleaver with an attitude”, was a breast cancer survivor. So when she was confronted with a degenerative and incurable disease, she searched for ways to combat it.

That search led her to Dr. Shortt.

“Hydrogen peroxide would be very good to kill whatever’s in there,” Shortt told her in February over the phone, according to a transcript of the taped consultation. “Because, right now, we don’t know what it is.”

March 9, 2004, she sat in one of those chairs in West Columbia as a 0.03 percent solution of hydrogen peroxide was administered through her veins. That first treatment lasted 90 minutes.

Afterward, Bibeau complained of abdominal pain and nausea, according to a federal lawsuit the family filed against Shortt. Two days later, the suit contends, she returned to Shortt’s clinic extremely weak, with bruising at the infusion site and severe vaginal bleeding.

The lawsuit alleges that Shortt ignored these signs of “acute hemolytic crisis” and failed to order a blood work-up for Bibeau, or to refer her to another physician. Shortt, while acknowledging that hydrogen peroxide therapy can destroy red blood cells after repeated treatments, denies those allegations.
When she arrived at the hospital on March 12, Bibeau was in multiple-organ failure. After two days, she was dead.

In July, a second patient of Shortt’s died. His name was Michael Bate, a 66-year-old retired engineer. He had advanced prostate cancer.

Bate’s wife, Janet, said he received eight hydrogen peroxide infusions, along with other treatments. (Bate also obtained the banned, discredited drug laetrile. Shortt acknowledges showing Bate how to use it after Bate made it clear he intended to do so against Shortt’s advice.) In this case, too, the physician has denied doing anything to harm his patient.

In September, armed state and federal officers raided Shortt’s office and confiscated his files.

Later that month, the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners demanded an emergency suspension of Shortt’s medical license.

Seeking support, Shortt traveled to the October conference, in Atlanta , of the International Oxidative Medicine Association, which developed the regimens he used. The group found that Shortt had followed its “well-established” protocols.

In its position paper, the group’s president, Dr. Robert Rowen, instead zeroed in on two FDA-approved drugs that Bibeau had previously been prescribed: the MS drug Copaxone and Tegretol, which is used to treat seizure disorders.

Rowen noted that among Copaxone’s listed side effects are “metorrhagia (profuse uterine bleeding), thrombosis, bruising, clotting problems, and infections.” An Internet site dedicated to Tegretol warns of “easy bruising, or reddish or purplish spots on the skin” as possible “signs of a blood disorder brought on by the drug.”

Rowen says it is “more than reasonable to conclude” that the interaction of these two drugs was “the proximate cause of this death.”

Shortt says he knew of no reason his treatment would react negatively with the drugs Bibeau was taking. He did not tell her to drop those medications.

Richland County forensic pathologist Clay Nichols says Bibeau had been on both drugs for more than a year “with no adverse effects.”

As the investigations go forward, Shortt has voluntarily ceased performing hydrogen peroxide infusions. The South Carolina medical board has scheduled a Jan. 21 hearing to revisit his case.

Coroner Watts stands by his conclusions.

“I don’t think he meant to kill her,” Watts says. “I’m just saying … she died as a result of his infusing her with something he shouldn’t have infused her with.”
